abdicate


  • Meaning  -  renounce; give up (position, right, or responsibility)
  • Synonyms -  relinquish, renounce, reject, disclaim, cast off.
  • Antonyms -  assert, assume, challenge, claim, defy, defend, hold, maintain, remain, retain, treasure, usurp
  • Usage -  When Edward VII abdicated the British throne, he surprised the entire world.
  • Remember -  ab (root ab means away as in abandon) + dic (dictatorship) + ate (to eat and hence reduce) : means to give away (or reduce) dictatorship and hence to give-up power.
